Introduction to computer motherboard : (Video Tutorial Basic Hardware)
Lets take a brief introduction to motherboard. Actually motherboard is a basic circuit board which has many slots, sockets and ports. There RAM (Random Access Memory), ROM (Read only memory), CPU (Central Processing Unit), CD Drive (Compact disk), DVD writer, Hard Disk, Sound card, Display card, Serial ports, parallel ports is connected. Lets understand it one by one.
#1 : Heat Sink :
#2 : CPU Socket : Here CPU or processor is installed.
#3 : RAM Slots : In a motherboard there may be DIMM, SIMM, DDR1, DDR2, DDR3 slots. There will be different kind of RAM is installed in different slots.
#4 : AT Power supply connector/ATX Power supply connector : Here SMPS (Switch mode power supply) will be connected. SMPS provides all types of required power supply for the motherboard.
#5 : FDD connector : It is a 34 pin floppy disk drive connector where floppy disk drive is connected. Here 1.44 MB, 1.2 MB floppy disk drive can be installed.
#6 : IDE connector : You may find 1 or 2 IDE connector in motherboard. It is a 40 pin connector where Hard disk drive or optical drive such as CD-ROM, CD writer, DVD ROM, DVD writer is connected through data cables.
#7 : AT/PS2 port : Keyboard is connected at this port.
#8 : Serial ports COM1 and COM2 : There are two types of serial ports in a motherboard known as serial port 1 and serial port 2 also known as COM1 and COM2. Here serial mouse or external dial up modem can be connected.
#9 : Parallel port or LPT1 : This is a printer port where printer can be plugged. Also known as LPT port (Line Print Terminal).
#10 : PCI Slots : 32 bit expansion slots where PCI expansion cards such as display card, Sound card, TV Tuner card, USB card (Universal Serial BUS) or any other card can be installed.
#11 : ROM BIOS : Read Only Memory Basic Input Output System.
#12 : CMOS battery : Through this battery our CMOS settings is saved.
#13 : EISA Slots : It is old type slots also known as 16 bit expansion slots it is to maintain backward compatibility.
